Ulysse Nardin wristwatch leads Bonhams auction

Las Vegas--International auctioneers Bonhams and Butterfields held its fall auction of Salon Jewelry this week, marking the company's first salon jewelry auction at The Venetian in Las Vegas.

It was timepieces, though, that were among the most anticipated of items, with the sale's marquee lot a very fine and rare, 18-karat gold Ulysse Nardin wristwatch. The timepiece, from the Clavius Collection of Fine Wristwatches, features a 41-jewel, automatic hour-repeating movement with 22-karat gold engraved rotor and a lapis lazuli dial boasting applied, gold Arabic numerals. The wristwatch was estimated between $25,000 and $35,000, but following a round of competitive bidding, sold for $45,750.

"The Clavius Collection was undoubtedly one of the finest single-owner offerings of wristwatches to be featured at public auction in Las Vegas," Bonhams and Butterfields jewelry specialist Michael Larsen said in a media release. "Bonhams and Butterfields was pleased to offer several of the finest contemporary examples of refined craftsmanship and technical mastery in horology instruments during the fall sale."

Additional items of note from the Clavius Collection included a limited-edition, 18-karat white-gold fly-back Glashutte chronograph wristwatch, which fetched $17,080; a stainless steel Ulysse Nardin automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch, which sold for $8,540; and a fine and unusual, 18-karat rose-gold automatic wristwatch featuring a Las Vegas-inspired roulette wheel indication, which attained $7,930.

Jewelry highlights from the fall sale included a sapphire and diamond flower brooch (sold for $10,370); a Bulgari yellow sapphire and diamond ring ($8,540); a multicolor sapphire and diamond necklace ($7,930); and a classic diamond eternity band ($7,930).
